Употребление терминов «опиаты» и «опиоиды» может иногда сбивать с толку. Эти термины часто используются как равнозначные, однако под опиатами чаще всего подразумеваются препараты естественного происхождения, например морфин, а в понятие «опиоиды» могут входить также синтетические вещества с той же молекулярной структурой, например оксикодон.
